The idea of Risk Management conjures up many different thoughts. Some think it is about buying insurance, other believe it is about ‘stopping things going wrong’ and others again believe it is about structures, policies, procedures and compliance. While all of these have their place, they can sometimes miss the entire point of what RM is. The Australian Standard defines RM as “Managing the effect of uncertainty on your objectives”. This sounds a little complex, but at it’s heart, RM is actually about helping you to achieve your stated objectives (or mission / vision) while recognizing that there are many uncertainties in life, and accounting for them. If done properly, RM is actually a major strategic motivator toward churches achieving what God has called them to… not just the drag of a compliance program.
